What Are Mains Motorised (Electric) Blinds?

Mains motorised blinds are powered directly from your home’s electricity supply rather than using a rechargeable battery.

  • Powered via a standard UK three-pin plug
  • No need to recharge batteries
  • Simple plug-in installation
  • Reliable and consistent power supply

They are often referred to as “electric blinds”, which is what most people search for.

How We Install Mains Blinds

All of our mains motorised blinds are supplied with a standard UK three-pin plug attached.

  • No hardwiring by our fitters
  • Plug directly into a nearby socket
  • Cable can be neatly secured along the frame or skirting
  • Quick and straightforward installation

Our fitters are blind specialists, not electricians. They are not permitted to carry out certified electrical works.

This is why we do not hardwire blinds directly into the mains supply.

Why We Do Not Offer Hardwiring

  • Hardwiring requires electrical certification
  • Blind fitters are not qualified electricians
  • Incorrect wiring can damage motors
  • Electrical faults can void motor warranties

We have seen occasions where blinds have been wired incorrectly by third parties, which has resulted in motors being damaged.

If a blind is hardwired and something goes wrong, it can mean bringing an electrician back to disconnect it before we can repair or replace the motor.

For this reason, most customers prefer the simplicity of a standard plug connection, or a rechargeable Li-ion Battery operated Blind.

When Mains Motorisation Is a Good Option

  • Where charging a battery is inconvenient
  • For elderly customers who prefer plug-in simplicity
  • In locations with easy access to a socket
  • For frequently used blinds

For example, patio doors can be an excellent location if there is a nearby socket available.

Available Blind Types

Faux wood Venetian blinds are not available with mains motors, as these are tilt-only motor systems.

Remote & Smart Control

  • Operates from a remote control
  • Can share the same remote as rechargeable blinds
  • Compatible with smart hubs
  • Can connect to smart speakers via a hub

Mains motorised blinds operate in the same way as rechargeable motorised blinds — the only difference is the power source.

Mains or Rechargeable?

Most customers now prefer lithium-ion rechargeable motors because they avoid visible cables and do not require a nearby socket.

However, mains motorisation remains a useful option in certain situations.

  • No battery charging required
  • Consistent power supply
  • Simple plug-in solution
  • Best suited where a socket is close by

Frequently Asked Questions

No results!
  • Can you hardwire the blind directly into my mains supply?

No. Our fitters are not electricians and cannot provide electrical certification. We supply blinds with a standard UK plug.
  • Will it work with my smart speaker?

Yes, if you have a compatible smart hub to connect the blind system to your smart speaker.
  • Is mains better than rechargeable?

Not necessarily. Rechargeable motors are more popular because they avoid visible cables, but mains can be ideal where charging is inconvenient.

  • What happens if the motor fails?

Although issues are rear they do occur. If the blind is plugged in, it is easy for us to disconnect and repair. Hardwired blinds can require an electrician to remove them first.
