Child Safety Regulations

Child safety regulations for blinds changed in 2014. Since then, all blinds supplied and installed must meet strict safety requirements to reduce risks associated with cords.

Chain Control with Safety Tension Device

The most common control system for Roman blinds is a continuous chain operation.

• Continuous chain control
• Chain secured to the wall with a tension device
• Mounted at least 1.5 metres above the floor
• Prevents loose hanging loops of chain

The chain is fixed to the wall on either the left or right side of the blind depending on the installation and customer preference.

Spring Release Chain Mechanism

An alternative child safety option is a spring release mechanism built into the chain control unit.

• The chain runs around a small cog inside the headrail
• The cog is held in place with a spring clip
• If pulled sharply, the cog releases from the mechanism
• The chain then drops free

Because the chain releases from the mechanism itself, this system does not require the chain to be fixed to the wall.

This can be particularly useful for installations such as bay windows where customers may prefer not to drill into window frames.

Quick Release Safety Catches

Roman blinds also include safety devices on the cords at the back of the blind.

• Quick release connectors fitted to lift cords
• Designed to separate under pressure
• Allows cords to fall free if tension occurs
• Included on every Roman blind

These connectors help reduce risk if someone becomes caught in the rear lift cords of the blind.

Motorised Roman Blinds

The most child-safe option of all is a motorised Roman blind.

• No cords or chains required
• Operated using a remote control
• Lithium-ion rechargeable motor
• Clean and simple operation

Motorisation removes the need for manual controls entirely, making it a very safe and convenient option.
