What Is a Cassetted Roman Blind?
A cassetted Roman blind is a Roman blind that uses a cassette pelmet at the top of the blind. Inside the cassette is a roller-style tube, which the Roman blind fabric and lift cords attach to.
This creates a neat pelmet across the top of the blind while also providing a very smooth and reliable mechanism for raising and lowering the blind.
The cassette helps conceal the workings of the blind, giving the window a more finished and tailored appearance.
How the Cassette Mechanism Works
Instead of the traditional Roman blind headrail, cassetted Roman blinds use a roller-style tube inside the pelmet.
The Roman blind fabric and lift cords are attached to this tube, which allows the blind to operate using a very smooth mechanism similar to a roller blind system.
- Roller-style tube inside the cassette
- Smooth lifting and lowering mechanism
- Neatly concealed operating system
Ideal for Motorised Roman Blinds
Cassetted Roman blinds are particularly well suited to motorisation.
Because the cassette uses a tubular roller system, it can house a lithium-ion rechargeable motor within the tube itself. This means there is no need for an external battery pack.
The motor used is slightly more powerful than a standard roller blind motor because Roman blinds are typically heavier.
- Tubular motor housed inside the tube
- Lithium-ion rechargeable battery
- No external battery pack required
- Simple remote control operation
Fabric Covered Pelmet
The cassette pelmet is normally covered in the same fabric as the Roman blind itself.
This creates a coordinated finish across the top of the window and helps frame the blind neatly when it is lowered.
Many customers choose this option because it gives the window a more decorative and complete appearance.
Where Cassetted Roman Blinds Work Best
Cassetted Roman blinds generally work best when fitted inside a window recess.
The cassette pelmet is slightly deeper than a standard Roman blind headrail, so fitting it inside the recess helps the blind sit more neatly within the window.
When fitted outside the recess, the pelmet can stand slightly further away from the wall, which may allow more light to enter around the sides of the blind.
Where a Standard Roman Blind May Be More Suitable
Cassetted Roman blinds are not always the best option for every window.
For example, they are not usually recommended for bay windows because the pelmet is larger and can prevent the blinds from sitting closely together.
In these situations, a slimmer standard Roman blind headrail is usually the better solution.
- Bay windows may suit slimline headrails better
- Cassette pelmets are deeper than standard headrails
- Standard Roman blinds allow closer blind positioning
