Lightweight Hardwood Shutter Ranges
Our wooden plantation shutters are crafted from specialist lightweight hardwoods chosen specifically for interior shutter manufacture. These timbers combine natural strength with reduced weight, helping panels operate smoothly while maintaining structural integrity.
SARK (Paulownia Hardwood)
Paulownia is an exceptionally lightweight hardwood and forms the basis of our SARK wooden shutter range. It is approximately 40% lighter than MDF, making panels easier to operate and particularly well suited to larger windows and tier-on-tier configurations.
Basswood
Basswood is a premium hardwood known for its smooth grain and excellent finishing qualities. It performs exceptionally well when painted or stained and provides strength without excessive weight, making it ideal for interior plantation shutters with moving louvres.
Both materials allow for beautifully crafted wooden shutters while keeping overall panel weight manageable for daily use.
Colours, Finishes and Natural Wood Grain
One of the key advantages of real wooden shutters is the ability to showcase authentic timber grain. Unlike MDF shutters, solid wood can be stained to highlight the natural character of the material.
- 18 standard painted colours for a clean, contemporary look
- 21 wood stain finishes to enhance the natural grain
- Visible timber texture on stained shutters
- Custom colour matching available (additional charge)
Stained finishes are particularly popular with solid wooden plantation shutters, as they emphasise the warmth and individuality of real hardwood in a way engineered materials cannot replicate.
Solid Panel and Plantation Shutter Styles
Solid wood shutters are available in both traditional solid panel designs and modern plantation-style shutters with adjustable louvres.Solid Panel Shutters
A solid panel shutter is a classic Victorian-style design that offers complete window coverage and strong architectural presence. These are ideal for period homes and rooms where a more traditional appearance is desired.Plantation Shutters
Wooden plantation shutters feature adjustable louvres, allowing you to control light and privacy while maintaining ventilation. This style offers greater flexibility and is particularly popular in living rooms and bedrooms. Both configurations can be manufactured using real hardwood for a premium, natural finish.Configuration Options
Solid wooden shutters can be manufactured in a wide range of configurations to suit different window layouts and room requirements.
- Tier-on-tier shutters for independent top and bottom operation
- Tracked shutters for wider openings and patio doors
- Bi-fold and tri-fold systems for larger glazed areas
This flexibility makes wooden shutters suitable for everything from standard windows to expansive glazing.

Shaped Windows and Bespoke Designs
One of the major advantages of real wood shutters is their suitability for shaped windows. Because they are handcrafted to the exact dimensions of your opening, solid wood shutters can be made for:
- Arched windows
- Apex windows
- Round or porthole windows
Each shaped shutter is individually manufactured to follow the contours of the window, creating a seamless made-to-measure finish. Due to the complexity involved, shaped shutters typically have longer lead times than standard rectangular designs.
Considerations for Solid Wood Shutters
While lightweight hardwood shutters offer many benefits, there are practical considerations to keep in mind.
- Real wood is lighter and can be more susceptible to dents than MDF
- Not always ideal for high-impact areas or busy playrooms
- Moisture-sensitive environments may be better suited to alternative materials
For feature rooms, bedrooms and lower-traffic spaces, solid wooden plantation shutters can be a stunning and long-lasting choice.
Wood vs MDF Shutters – What’s the Difference?
One of the most common questions we’re asked is how solid wooden shutters compare to MDF shutters. Both are designed for interior installation, but they differ in weight, finish and durability characteristics.
- Material Composition: Solid wood shutters are made from real hardwood, while MDF shutters are engineered from compressed wood fibres with a smooth outer coating.
- Weight: Lightweight hardwood shutters are typically lighter than MDF, which can make larger panels easier to operate.
- Finish Options: Real wood allows for natural stain finishes that highlight the grain. MDF is generally painted only.
- Durability: MDF is denser and may be more resistant to dents in high-traffic areas. Real wood offers strength with a more natural feel.
- Moisture Suitability: MDF-based shutters can be more suitable for bathrooms or kitchens where humidity is higher.
- Appearance: Wooden shutters provide a visible grain and traditional character that cannot be replicated by engineered materials.
The right choice depends on where the shutters are being installed and the look you’re aiming to achieve. For feature rooms and natural finishes, solid wooden plantation shutters are often preferred. For busier areas or rooms with higher moisture levels, MDF alternatives may be more practical.
