How Shutter and Shade Works
- When the blind is fully raised, it stacks neatly and discreetly out of sight. Because it is a pleated design, it takes up very little space and cannot be seen through the open shutter louvers.
- When the pleated blind is lowered and the shutter panels and louvers are closed, Shutter and Shade provides one of the highest levels of room darkening available from a shutter solution.
While no window covering can completely eliminate all light, the combination of the integrated blind and shutter panels significantly reduces incoming light, making it an excellent choice for rooms where darkness is particularly important, such as bedrooms, nurseries and for those who sleep during the day.

Where Shutter and Shade Really Shines
This system is particularly well suited to rooms where light control is essential:
- Nurseries and children’s bedrooms
- Bedrooms for light-sensitive sleepers
- Homes with shift workers who sleep during the day
- Rooms where privacy and reduced light levels are a priority
- Cinema rooms or rooms that double up as a home cinema
It’s an excellent option for customers who love the look of shutters but want additional light reduction without adding curtains or separate blinds.
Comfort Considerations
Shutter and Shade also offers practical benefits beyond light control.
In warmer months, lowering the blind and closing the shutters can help reduce heat build-up when the sun is streaming in, keeping rooms cooler during the day.
Because the blind sits within the frame, airflow through the window may be slightly reduced when everything is closed. This isn’t usually an issue, but it’s worth bearing in mind — particularly overnight.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Shutter and Shade completely black out a room?
Shutter and Shade offers a much higher level of room darkening than shutters alone. When the blind is lowered and the shutters are closed, light is significantly reduced, making it ideal for sleep spaces. As with any window covering, a small amount of light may still be visible around the edges.
Can the blind be hidden when not in use?
Yes. When fully raised, the pleated blind stacks very compactly within the frame and is not visible through the shutter louvers.
Can I use the shutters without the blind?
Absolutely. The shutters and the blind can be used independently, giving you flexible control throughout the day.
Is Shutter and Shade suitable for nurseries?
Yes. It’s a popular choice for nurseries and children’s bedrooms thanks to its enhanced light control and neat, integrated design. In addition Shutter and Shade is Child Safe by Design.
Will it affect airflow into the room?
When the blind and shutters are fully closed, airflow will be reduced compared to shutters alone. This is worth considering if ventilation overnight is particularly important to you.
Does the frame look bulky?
The frame is wider than a standard shutter frame, but it is purpose-designed to house both elements neatly, resulting in a clean, balanced appearance rather than an add-on look. The width of the shutter frame means it is not usually suitable for bay windows, however there may be other solutions available in this case.
