Solar Reflective Coating Roller Blinds
Advanced Solar Control for Warmer Rooms
Solar Reflective Coating (often referred to as SRC or Advanced Solar Control – ASC) is a specialist backing applied to selected roller blind fabrics. Designed to improve thermal performance, this coating helps reflect UV rays and reduce heat build-up during warmer months.
Originally developed for conservatory roof pleated blinds, solar reflective technology is now available on a limited number of roller blind fabrics — offering discreet, effective temperature control for modern homes.

What is Solar Reflective Coating?
Solar Reflective Coating (SRC) or Advanced Solar Control (ASC) is a fine aluminium layer applied to the reverse of the blind fabric. This reflective surface helps bounce a greater proportion of solar radiation back through the glass rather than allowing it to transfer into the room.
The coating works in two ways:
- Reflecting heat and UV rays in summer
- Providing a slightly improved thermal barrier in winter
While not a replacement for specialist glazing, it can make a noticeable difference in rooms that experience high levels of sunlight.
Ideal Applications
Solar reflective roller blinds are particularly effective in rooms that experience prolonged sun exposure.
- South-facing windows
- Conservatory side windows
- Orangeries
- Sunrooms with solid roofs
- Large glazed areas in modern extensions
In these environments, heat build-up can quickly make a space uncomfortable. The reflective backing helps moderate this effect while maintaining a clean, streamlined appearance.
Why Choose Solar Reflective Roller Blinds?
Roller blinds offer a sleek and minimal solution for solar control. Unlike pleated blinds, which are often used for individual panels, a single roller blind can cover a wider span of glazing.
- Neat and discreet when raised
- Can cover larger window sections
- Suitable for multiple adjacent windows
- Easy to operate
This makes them particularly suitable for long runs of glazing where multiple pleated blinds may otherwise be required.
Year-Round Performance
During summer months, the aluminium-backed coating reflects a higher percentage of solar energy, helping to reduce glare and heat gain.
In winter, the same reflective layer can contribute to improved insulation by helping to reduce heat loss back through the glazing.
While the primary benefit is summer heat control, the additional winter insulation can support overall energy efficiency.
Roller vs Pleated Solar Reflective Blinds
Solar reflective coatings were originally developed for pleated blinds used on conservatory roofs. Pleated blinds remain highly effective for roof glazing and smaller panels.
However, roller blinds with SRC offer:
- Greater coverage per blind
- A cleaner, simpler appearance
- The ability to fully retract out of sight
This can make roller blinds a more practical solution for vertical glazing in conservatories and extensions.
Fabric Options
Solar Reflective Coating is available on selected roller fabrics only. Not all roller materials are compatible with SRC or ASC backing.
During consultation, we can advise which fabrics are available with solar reflective properties and help you balance performance with colour, privacy and style preferences.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does SRC stand for?
SRC stands for Solar Reflective Coating. It may also be referred to as ASC (Advanced Solar Control). Both describe a reflective aluminium-backed fabric treatment.Does solar reflective coating make the room completely cool?
No. It helps reduce heat gain, particularly in strong sunlight, but it does not replace specialist glazing or air conditioning.
Can I see the reflective backing from inside the room?
No. The reflective coating is applied to the rear of the blind fabric and faces the glass. Is it worth upgrading to SRC?
For south-facing windows, conservatories and heavily glazed rooms, many customers find the improved heat control worthwhile.Does it make the blind look metallic?
No. The reflective layer is on the reverse side only and does not affect the front-facing appearance.
