How to Maintain Your Blinds and Shutters

As we move into spring, many of us start thinking about refreshing our homes. While cleaning is often top of the list, it’s easy to overlook your blinds and shutters. With a little regular care, they can stay looking beautiful and working smoothly for many years.

Here’s our simple guide to keeping your window coverings in great condition.

Cleaning Faux Wood Venetian Blinds

Venetian Blinds

Venetian blinds benefit from regular light cleaning to keep them looking fresh.

  • Use an ostrich feather duster to reach between slats and cords
  • Dust regularly to prevent build-up
  • Avoid allowing dust to become sticky and difficult to remove

Little and often is the key to easy maintenance.

Venetian Blinds with Cords

If your Venetian blinds are operated with cords, a few simple checks will help keep them safe and working smoothly.

  • Check the cord toggles at the ends are secure
  • Gently pull the knot out and ensure it is tight
  • Make sure the toggle cannot easily pull off

When raising and lowering your blinds, there is also a best practice to follow.

The lift cords feed into a consolidator, which is designed as a safety feature to separate under pressure and prevent loops forming.

  • Start by gently pulling the bottom toggle
  • As soon as you can reach it, switch to pulling from the consolidator

This helps reduce strain on the cords and prevents the safety mechanism from separating unnecessarily.

Vertical Blinds

Vertical blinds are one of the easiest window coverings to maintain and require very little ongoing care.

  • Operate gently using the control wand — avoid forcing the mechanism
  • Wipe the wand occasionally with a damp cloth, then dry it
  • Some of our fabric slats can be washed if needed

If washing slats:

  • Soak in warm water (never use a washing machine)
  • Avoid creasing the fabric
  • Hang to drip dry

If you’re unsure whether your fabric is suitable, we’re always happy to advise.

cleaning Shutters with an ostrich feather duster

Shutters

Shutters are durable and easy to maintain, especially with regular cleaning.

  • Dust regularly to prevent build-up
  • Carry out occasional deeper cleans as needed

For maintenance:

  • Check louvres hold their position correctly
  • If slightly loose, gently tighten the tension screws

Important: Only adjust very slightly — over-tightening can damage the internal mechanism.

Roller Blinds

Regular use is key to maintaining roller blinds.

  • Raise and lower them regularly to prevent sun bleaching in one position
  • This also helps reduce dust build-up
  • Use a soft vacuum brush on a low setting to clean the fabric

Gentle, consistent use will help keep your roller blinds looking their best.

Roman Blinds

Roman blinds are relatively low maintenance but benefit from gentle care.

  • Use a soft vacuum brush on a low setting
  • Lightly clean to remove dust and refresh the fabric

A gentle approach will help maintain their shape and appearance.

Chains and Mechanisms

Keeping chains and mechanisms clean helps ensure smooth operation.

  • Wipe chains regularly to remove dirt and dust
  • Ensure they run smoothly through the mechanism
  • Avoid build-up that could cause wear over time

Motorised Blinds

Spring is the perfect time to check your motorised blinds are working as they should.

  • Recharge or replace batteries where needed
  • Check remote controls and replace batteries if required
  • Ensure blinds are operating smoothly

Curtains and Curtain Poles

Curtains require a slightly different approach when it comes to cleaning.

  • Vacuum regularly using a soft brush attachment
  • Always dry clean for a full clean

This prevents shrinkage or distortion caused by different fabric reactions.

For curtain poles:

  • Metal poles: wipe with a damp cloth, then dry
  • Wooden poles: clean and apply a light wax

Waxing helps rings or eyelets glide smoothly.
