What Are Electric Cellular Pleated Blinds?

Electric cellular pleated blinds are motorised blinds made from honeycomb (cellular) fabric. The fabric forms a structured air pocket design that helps improve insulation while still allowing the blind to move smoothly.

Motorisation allows the blind to be raised, lowered or retracted at the touch of a button, making them ideal for windows that are difficult to reach.

The headrail is slightly larger than a manual blind, as it needs to house the motor inside.

Where Electric Cellular Blinds Work Best

Motorised cellular pleated blinds are most commonly used in areas where manual operation would be difficult or impractical.

This includes apex windows, roof windows and larger glazed areas such as Edwardian lantern roofs, where blinds often span across the ceiling space.

  • Apex and shaped windows
  • Roof blinds and skylights
  • Edwardian lantern roofs
  • Hard-to-reach glazing

Motorisation makes it easy to control light and heat in these areas without the need for ladders or poles.

Rechargeable Battery Operation

Most electric cellular pleated blinds are powered by a lithium-ion rechargeable battery.

The battery is mounted externally and connected to the motor within the headrail. It is charged using a simple cable and standard plug.

With normal use, the battery typically requires charging around once every six months.

  • Lithium-ion rechargeable battery
  • External battery pack
  • Simple plug-in charging
  • Typically charged twice per year

Why the Battery Is Visible

In installations such as lantern roofs, we often position the battery slightly below the headrail so it remains accessible.

While it is possible to hide the battery, this can cause problems if the blind runs out of power while fully closed, as the battery would then be difficult to reach.

By keeping it visible and accessible, it ensures the blind can always be recharged when needed.

The battery is discreet and does not significantly impact the overall appearance of the blind.

Thermal Performance & Insulation

Cellular pleated blinds are designed with a honeycomb structure that creates an insulating air gap within the fabric.

This air pocket helps slow the transfer of heat through the window, making the room more comfortable throughout the year.

In colder months, it helps keep warmth inside the room. In warmer months, it can help reduce heat build-up from direct sunlight.

  • Honeycomb structure creates an insulating air layer
  • Helps reduce heat loss through windows
  • Improves comfort in both summer and winter

Light Control & Room Darkening

Cellular pleated blinds are available in both light diffusing and room darkening fabrics, allowing you to choose the level of light control that suits your space.

Room darkening fabrics are particularly effective if you want to make a room darker, especially in bedrooms or areas where glare needs to be reduced.

Because these blinds are usually fitted neatly within the window recess, they sit close to the frame, which helps reduce light coming in around the edges.

  • Light diffusing or room darkening fabric options
  • Room darkening fabrics reduce incoming light
  • Neat fit within the recess helps limit light gaps

Mains Powered Option

Electric cellular pleated blinds can also be supplied as mains powered blinds.

These are provided with a standard UK three-pin plug. We do not hardwire blinds directly into the mains, as our fitters are not electricians and cannot certify electrical work.

If hardwiring is required, a qualified electrician would need to carry out that work.

In many cases, customers prefer rechargeable systems as they are easier to maintain and service.

Simple Control Options

Electric cellular pleated blinds are operated using a remote control, making them simple and convenient to use.

Multiple blinds can be controlled together or individually, depending on the setup.

  • Remote control operation
  • Individual or grouped control
  • Smooth and quiet movement

Frequently Asked Questions

No results!
  • How often do electric cellular blinds need charging?

Typically around every six months, depending on the size of the blind and how often it is used.
  • Why is the battery visible?

It is positioned where it can be easily accessed. If it were hidden and the blind ran out of power, it could be difficult to reach and recharge.
  • Can these blinds be used in roof windows?

Yes. They are one of the most common solutions for roof glazing, lantern roofs and apex windows.

  • Are mains powered options available?

Yes. They are supplied with a standard three-pin plug, but any hardwiring must be carried out by a qualified electrician.
