What Is a Z Frame?

The Z frame is the outer frame that your shutter panels are hinged to. Unlike an L frame, which sits neatly inside the reveal, a Z frame sits on the front edge of the recess.

  • Shaped like the letter “Z” in profile
  • One section sits just inside the recess
  • The outer section overlaps slightly onto the surrounding wall
  • Creates a framed look around the window opening

This design allows the shutter panels to sit neatly at the front of the window recess.

Z Frame vs L Frame

The L frame typically fits fully inside the window reveal, often positioned close to the handles.

  • L frame sits within the recess
  • Z frame sits on the edge of the recess
  • Z frame overlaps slightly onto the surrounding wall
  • Z frame creates a more defined outer border

The choice between the two is often down to window style, personal preference and practical considerations.

Opening the Panels

  • Panels can open up to 180 degrees
  • Allows shutters to fold flat against the wall
  • Provides clear access to the window when required

On smaller shutters — particularly tier-on-tier designs — this can be very practical.

On larger, wider panels, regularly opening the doors fully flat may place additional weight on the hinges, so this may not always be the most practical solution for wider installations.

Z Frame Styles

  • Bullnose Z frame – smooth and simple finish
  • Decorative Z frame – includes subtle decorative detailing
  • No price difference between styles
  • Available across all of our shutter ranges

The bullnose Z frame is the most popular option, offering a clean and subtle look around the window. Decorative styles provide a slightly more detailed finish for those who prefer it.

When Is a Z Frame a Good Option?

  • Smaller windows
  • Tier-on-tier shutters
  • Where a framed look around the recess is desired
  • When full 180-degree opening is useful

While it can be used on larger windows, it is often most practical and visually balanced on smaller installations.
