Tier-on-Tier Shutters

Tier-on-tier shutters are a versatile shutter style made up of two separate shutter panels, one above the other. This design allows the top section to be opened independently from the bottom, giving you flexible control over light and privacy throughout the day. They are an excellent option for rooms where you want to enjoy daylight and views while maintaining privacy at lower levels. During the day, the top tier can be opened or folded back, while the lower tier remains closed. In the evening, both sections can be closed for full privacy and light control.

How Tier-on-Tier Shutters Work

Tier-on-tier shutters are effectively a shutter with a door on top of a door. Each tier operates independently, allowing you to adjust the top and bottom sections separately.

This makes them particularly well suited to windows where the top panels can be folded back neatly against the wall, keeping them out of the way and above head height. The result is a practical and visually balanced solution that works well in everyday living spaces.

Why Choose Tier-on-Tier Shutters?

Tier-on-tier shutters offer one of the most flexible shutter configurations available, combining the benefits of café-style shutters with full-height coverage when needed.

  • Independent top and bottom shutter panels
  • Flexible control over light and privacy
  • Café-style appearance during the day
  • Full-height privacy in the evening
  • Ideal for street-facing or overlooked windows
  • Timeless and balanced shutter design

Ideal Rooms for Tier-on-Tier Shutters

Tier-on-tier shutters work particularly well in rooms where privacy is needed without sacrificing natural light.

They are commonly chosen for:

  • Living rooms
  • Dining rooms
  • Ground-floor windows
  • Period or character properties

Their ability to adapt throughout the day makes them a popular choice for busy family homes as well as more formal spaces.

Choosing the Right Shutter Material

Tier-on-tier shutters can be manufactured across our shutter ranges, but material choice is especially important with this style.

Because the top tier is supported by hinges, gravity naturally pulls down on the doors over time. Heavier shutter panels are more prone to hinge movement, which can affect alignment and how neatly the doors close.

For this reason, we generally recommend using lighter weight wood shutters such as our Sark Shutters for tier-on-tier designs wherever possible.

  • Available across our shutter ranges
  • Lighter weight wood recommended for best performance
  • Reduced strain on hinges over time
  • Improved long-term alignment and door closure

While MDF or heavier shutter materials can be used, they may be more susceptible to hinge movement in tier-on-tier configurations, particularly on larger windows.

Solid Panel Shutters as Tier on Tier

Tier-on-Tier Solid Panel Shutters

Tier-on-tier shutters are also an excellent option when paired with solid panel shutters. Solid panels are either fully open or fully closed, rather than adjustable with louvres.

Using a tier-on-tier configuration with solid panels allows you to keep the lower section closed for privacy, while opening the top section to allow in light. This makes them a practical solution for rooms where adjustable louvres are not required but flexibility is still important.

  • Available with solid wood shutter panels
  • Bottom section closed for privacy
  • Top section opened for light
  • Ideal where louvres are not required

A Practical and Elegant Shutter Style

Tier-on-tier shutters offer a balanced combination of practicality and style. They provide more flexibility than full-height shutters alone, while retaining a classic, elegant appearance that suits both traditional and modern homes.

As with all shutters, careful measuring, correct material choice and professional installation are key to ensuring smooth operation and long-term performance.
