Child Safety Options for Roller Blinds

Manual Roller blinds operate using a side chain. For child safety, there are two approved options.

  • Break-apart safety connector in the chain
  • Continuous loop chain with wall-mounted tensioning device (P-clip)
  • Both options comply with child safety regulations
  • Minimum fitting height of 1.5 metres from the floor for Continuous Chains altough chains with a break apart can be longer.

Break-Apart Chain Connector

The break-apart connector is an interlocking bead fitted into the roller blind chain.

  • Designed to pull apart under pressure
  • Separates into two hanging sections
  • Helps reduce risk if someone becomes caught
  • Can be clipped back together easily

The connector is designed to release at a maximum of six kilograms of pressure. In reality, it will often release sooner to allow for material flexibility and temperature changes.

This option allows for a slightly longer chain, which can be very practical — for example over kitchen sinks or work surfaces.

How to Reconnect the Break-Apart Chain

If the chain comes apart, please don’t worry. It is designed to do this.

  1. Hold one side of the connector so the two longer prongs are facing outward.
  2. Take the other half of the connector.
  3. Rotate it 90 degrees.
  4. Line up the longer prongs so they sit across the matching section.
  5. Push the two halves together firmly.

It should clip securely back into place and the chain will operate as normal.

Why It May Release Under Normal Use

  • Heavier blinds can create more tension
  • Large blinds may cause more natural strain
  • The connector is designed to release for safety
  • Temperature changes can affect materials slightly

On very large or heavy blinds, a break-apart connector may separate more frequently because it is doing exactly what it is designed to do.

Continuous Chain with Tensioning Device (P-Clip)

The alternative safety option is a continuous loop chain secured to the wall using a tensioning device, often called a P-clip.

  • Chain forms a continuous loop
  • Held securely against the wall
  • Mounted at least 1.5 metres above floor level
  • Prevents loose hanging chain

This option is often preferred for larger or heavier blinds, as the chain remains securely tensioned at all times.

We Show You How

At the point of consultation and again at installation, we will demonstrate how the safety connector works and how to reconnect it if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

No results!
  • Is the chain supposed to come apart?

Yes. The break-apart connector is designed to release under pressure for safety.
  • Why does it sometimes come apart during normal use?

On larger or heavier blinds, the extra tension can cause the connector to release more easily.
  • Can I reconnect it myself?

Yes. It simply clips back together using a 90-degree rotation.
  • Is a continuous chain safer?

Both options are compliant with child safety regulations when fitted correctly. Continuous chains are often better suited to heavier blinds.
  • What is a P-clip?

A P-clip (tensioning device) holds a continuous chain securely against the wall and is fitted at least 1.5 metres above floor level.
