Why Choose Motorised Roman Blinds?
Motorised Roman blinds offer the same visual warmth and fabric choice as a traditional Roman blind, with the added benefit of smooth, controlled operation.
- Motorised or electric operation for effortless control
- Ideal for everyday use or hard-to-reach windows
- Excellent thermal performance when interlined
- Suitable for room darkening applications
- Clean, uncluttered finish with no operating cords
- Can be fitted inside or outside the window recess
- Wide choice of fabrics, linings and finishes
Thermal and Room Darkening Performance
Roman blinds are one of the best fabric blind styles for insulation. Adding an interlining creates two layers of fabric at the window, with an insulating air gap between them. This makes motorised Roman blinds particularly well suited to bedrooms, living spaces, and rooms where comfort is important.
With the addition of a room darkening lining, Roman blinds also become an effective solution for reducing incoming light, especially when fitted inside the recess.

Motorised Roman Blind Systems
When Roman blinds are motorised, there are two main lithium-ion rechargeable battery systems available. Both systems are reliable, discreet, and designed for long-term everyday use.
Cassetted Motorised Roman Blinds
This option uses a cassette system similar in principle to a motorised roller blind. A roller tube houses the motor, which rotates to pull the cords at the back of the Roman blind, raising and lowering it smoothly. A static cassette pelmet sits at the top of the blind, concealing the operating mechanism.
This system offers a very neat, modern appearance at the head of the blind.
- Lithium-ion rechargeable battery operation
- Motor housed inside a roller tube
- Static cassette pelmet concealing the mechanism
- Smooth, controlled raising and lowering
- Ideal for a clean, contemporary finish
Motorised Roman Blinds with Headrail System
This option uses a more traditional metal Roman blind headrail. Depending on the size of the blind, the motor and rechargeable battery are mounted discreetly within the headrail itself. The blind is charged in situ, without the need to remove any components.
This system offers a more classic Roman blind appearance at the top of the blind.
- Lithium-ion rechargeable battery operation
- Motor and battery housed within the headrail
- Charged in position
- Traditional Roman blind appearance
- Suitable for a wide range of window sizes
Battery Life and Charging
Both rechargeable battery systems offer excellent performance. Depending on the size of the blind and frequency of use, a single charge typically lasts around six to eight months.
Charging is simple and carried out in position, making these systems practical and low maintenance for everyday use.
Hardwired Electric Roman Blinds
Hardwired electric Roman blinds are available, however they are only supplied using a tubular motor system housed within a cassette pelmet headrail. This means the operating mechanism sits inside a roller-style tube, with a fixed cassette concealing the motor at the top of the blind.
At present, we do not have a manufacturer that offers a hardwired motor within a slim, traditional Roman blind headrail. If you are looking for a more classic Roman blind appearance at the top of the blind, this is only achievable using a lithium-ion rechargeable battery system, where the motor and battery are discreetly housed within the headrail.
Hardwired systems are supplied with a plug for connection to a standard socket. If a fully hardwired installation is required, this would need to be completed by a qualified electrician. For this reason, and because of the added complexity around future servicing or motor replacement, rechargeable battery-operated systems are usually the preferred option.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between motorised and electric Roman blinds?
There is no difference — the terms “motorised” and “electric” Roman blinds are used interchangeably. Both refer to Roman blinds that are operated using a motor rather than a manual chain or cord.
Are motorised Roman blinds battery powered or mains powered?
Most motorised Roman blinds are powered by a lithium-ion rechargeable battery. This avoids the need for mains wiring and makes them suitable for retrofitting in most homes. Hardwired electric options are also available, but only in specific systems.
How long does the battery last on a motorised Roman blind?
Depending on the size of the blind and how often it is used, a fully charged battery typically lasts around six to eight months before needing to be recharged.
How are motorised Roman blinds charged?
Rechargeable motorised Roman blinds are charged in position, using a charging lead. There is no need to remove the blind or dismantle any part of the system.
Can motorised Roman blinds be controlled by a remote?
Yes. Motorised and electric Roman blinds are operated using a remote control as standard, allowing you to raise, lower, and stop the blind easily.
Can motorised Roman blinds be controlled using a phone or app?
Yes. An optional hub can be added, allowing the blinds to be controlled via an app on your smartphone or tablet. This can also enable integration with compatible smart home systems.
Are motorised Roman blinds suitable for bedrooms?
Yes. When combined with a room darkening lining, motorised Roman blinds are an excellent choice for bedrooms. They also offer good thermal performance, especially when interlined.
Are motorised Roman blinds good for insulation?
Yes. Roman blinds are one of the best fabric blind styles for insulation. Adding an interlining creates an extra layer and air gap at the window, helping to reduce heat loss and improve comfort.
Can motorised Roman blinds be fitted inside or outside the recess?
Yes. Motorised Roman blinds can be fitted either inside the window recess for a neat finish, or outside the recess to maximise light control and coverage.
Do hardwired electric Roman blinds look the same as battery-powered ones?
Not always. Currently we can only get hardwired electric Roman blinds using a tubular motor system housed within a cassette pelmet. If you prefer a more traditional Roman blind appearance with a slim headrail, this is only available using a lithium-ion rechargeable battery system.
Which motorised Roman blind option is best?
For most homes, rechargeable battery-operated motorised Roman blinds are the preferred option. They avoid permanent wiring, are easier to install and maintain, and offer greater flexibility in terms of design and appearance.
