ABS Slats for Plantation Shutters
Durable shutter slats designed to cope with moisture, fresh air and everyday use, while still offering the appearance of traditional plantation shutters.
What Are ABS Shutter Slats?
ABS slats are made from a strong, durable composite material that is highly resistant to moisture and environmental changes. This makes them particularly useful in situations where traditional wood or MDF shutters may be more vulnerable to damp conditions.
At Blinds & Shutter, we use ABS slats in two of our shutter ranges: the Alderney range and the Herm fully waterproof range. Each range uses ABS slightly differently depending on the intended environment.
The main advantage of ABS slats is their ability to cope with occasional moisture without the risk of swelling or damage that can affect other materials.

Alderney Shutters
The Alderney range combines an MDF shutter frame with durable ABS slats. This creates a strong, stable shutter while offering improved resistance to occasional moisture around the window.
This makes Alderney shutters a particularly good choice for homes where windows are often left slightly open throughout the year. In these situations, small amounts of cold air, condensation or light rain can occasionally reach the shutters.
ABS slats help reduce the risk of those conditions affecting the performance of the shutter.
- MDF frame with ABS slats
- Choice of 18 painted colours
- Available with or without centre tilt rod
- Suitable for everyday living spaces
Louver Sizes & Colour Options
Like many of our shutter ranges, ABS slat shutters are available in a variety of louver sizes to suit different window styles and levels of light control.
The Alderney range is available in four popular louver widths:
- 63mm
- 76mm
- 89mm
- 114mm
Customers can also choose from 18 painted colour finishes, giving far more flexibility than standard MDF shutters, which typically come in fewer colour options.
Herm Fully Waterproof Shutters
Our Herm shutters take the moisture resistance even further. Unlike the Alderney range, Herm shutters are made entirely from ABS material — both the frame and the slats.
This makes them ideal for environments where the shutters may be regularly exposed to water.
Typical locations include bathrooms, wet rooms or family bathrooms where splashing water is more likely.
- Fully waterproof ABS construction
- Ideal for bathrooms and wet rooms
- Suitable for windows near showers
- Resistant to regular moisture exposure
Hardware on Herm Waterproof Shutters
Because Herm shutters are designed for wetter environments, they include some different hardware compared with standard shutters.
The hinges are stainless steel rather than colour-matched hinges. Stainless steel prevents rust in humid environments such as bathrooms.
Herm shutters also use a ball catch system at the top and bottom of the door rather than the magnetic catches used on most shutters.
This means the shutter panels require a slightly firmer push to close and a slightly stronger pull to open, helping keep the doors securely closed.
Herm shutters are supplied with concealed tilt only, which is the most popular louver control option today.
Where ABS Slat Shutters Work Best
ABS slat shutters are designed to offer additional durability where conditions may be slightly more demanding.
They are particularly useful in situations such as:
- Homes where windows are often left slightly open
- Bathrooms and wet rooms
- Family bathrooms with young children
- Rooms where condensation may occur
They allow you to enjoy the look and practicality of shutters while adding extra resilience where moisture might occasionally be present.
